All this talk about medical marijuana and recreational marijuana has just recently hit mainstream reports, but how has the marijuana conversation evolved over the past half-century?

1970’s – Marijuana was named a Schedule 1 drug, nearly 75% of cannabis used in the U.S. was sourced from overseas, and President Nixon declared the War on Drugs

1980’s – The U.S. Government patented Marinol, which was a marijuana medication used to treat nausea; penalties for marijuana possession were increased and the efforts to decriminalize marijuana were overruled

1990’s – Scientists discovered cannabinoid receptors, nearly 55% of oncologists surveyed to make marijuana legal by prescription, and California became the first state to legalize Medical Marijuana

Early 2000’s – 13 U.S. states have now legalized Medical Marijuana, the U.S. patented cannabinoids, physicians groups fought to reschedule marijuana, and states strengthened possession guidelines

2010 – 23 U.S. states have now legalized Medical Marijuana, federal guidelines allowed banks to provide financial services to legal marijuana sellers, the Federal Government removed obstacles to marijuana research
